PTA Programs

Volunteer Now!

 
PTA coordinates wonderful programs that take many volunteer hours to run successfully. Whatever your skills or availability, we need your help! Print and fill out the PTA Volunteer Interest Form or Eail the PTA. Be sure to register in the Media Center ASAP - WCPSS Policy #5422 requires all volunteers to register each year. Committee chairs should contact you by mid-Sept. However, PTA Leaders are also volunteers with other priorities so feel free to initiate contact.

Accelerated Reader

This committee is responsible for supporting the AR program where students earn points by taking computerized multiple-choice tests on AR books they read. Volunteers prepare award certificates and other rewards.

Book Fair

The Book Fair is a one-week book sale event for students and parents held twice a year in the media center the beginning of December and the end of April. Volunteers help with set-up, assist students with preview and purchases, serve as cashiers, work Family Night, and help with packing up books at the conclusion of the sale.

Cultural Arts Series

These performances, arranged by the Cultural Arts Committee and supported by the FW PTA, received partial funding through a grant from the United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County, Inc., with funds from the North Carolina Arts Council, a state agency, and Wake County Government and the Wake County Public School System.

Last year we had an impressive lineup of the performances!

Do-Dads

Respond to periodic requests from school staff for simple repairs and projects. May involve light construction. (No gender requirement.)

Room Parents

A Room Parent is sort of a "class mom/dad" for your teacher - schedule Hook a Books, give ideas and help out during teacher appreciation week/luncheon, recognize your teacher's birthday, distribute and coordinate information to the PTA. It's great when there are multiple Room Parents in each class!

Hook a Book – Reading in the classroom

Volunteers choose 2-3 books from a list compiled by the programming team around a central theme, which has been chosen to reflect a particular IB attitude (character trait). Upon entering a classroom, the reader shares this theme with the class, and engages in a short discussion of how it relates to the IB attitude. After reading a storybook, they may discuss how characters or themes relate to the IB attitude.

Grade Parent Hook a Book Tasks

Hook a Book – Programming Team

With the assistance of the Media Specialists, team members select books from the FW collection that illustrate the IB attitudes (character attributes). Volunteer readers for the program then choose books from these lists when reading to the classrooms. The programming team evaluates books by grade level and prepares short conversation prompts relating to the books and the IB attitudes. Even if you are unable to make the team meetings, you may provide book recommendations to the programming team by leaving a note with the Media Specialists.
 
Approximate time commitment: one 2 hours meeting every 4-6 weeks

Hospitality

The Hospitality Team provides and/or serves refreshments at various functions throughout the year. Primary events include the Welcome Back Teacher Breakfast (August), Holiday Evening Concert (December), and the Staff Appreciation Luncheon (May). Volunteers are notified via email when a need for food and/or servers arises.

Kindergarten Registration

Volunteers greet parents of rising kindergartners and assist them with filling out the forms necessary to register their child for the upcoming school year.

Media Helpers

Volunteers help Media Specialists with shelving books and other duties.

Mighty Moms

Volunteers meet Tuesday morning in the school workroom to complete projects requested by teachers such as photocopying, cutting, laminating. (Sorry – children are not allowed in the workroom. If you have younger children and wish to help with this kind of task, please let your child’s teacher know that you are available to take this kind of work home.)

A weekly commitment is not required. Please attend as your availability allows.

Mini-Grants

Mini-Grants are financial requests submitted by FWES teachers and staff for specific Purchases to enhance the school.  For example, the purchase of a volume of encyclopedias or the hiring of a guest lecturer might be the purpose of a mini-grant.  Mini-Grants are available based on the PTA's budget constraints.  Any request must be approved by the School Leadership Committee and the PTA  Executive committee.  There is no guarantee that a request will be granted.

Outreach

Donate clothes for emergency needs, help organize Lost & Found, assist with book drives to build class libraries, help support families in crisis and/or help address special needs within the FWES population.

Physical Education Helpers

Work with PE instructors to conduct physical fitness evaluations in the fall and field day in May.

Picture Day

Assist the photographer to collect funds, preparing students, filing orders, etc.

Reflections

School Improvement Team

State law mandates each school have a School Improvement Team (SIT) to create, review & revise annual performance goals.  The team is composed of elected staff and parents.  (Anyone can view the plan housed in the Media Center.) Parent representatives will be formally  elected at the first General PTA meeting on 9/2. SIT (also called “Leadership”) meetings occur 3:00 – 4:00, the 2nd Monday of each month from Sept thru April except in February.

Translators

Become part of the FWES second language database which will be used, as needed, to assist families without an English speaking adult. All second languages needed

Tutors

Tutors meet with a student on a weekly basis to provide assistance with materials determined by the teacher. Some of our younger ESL students would benefit from someone simply reading to them. You may request to be matched with a student in a particular grade, with particular subject matter needs (e.g. ESL), or at a convenient day/time for you.

Vision Check

Volunteers assist in evaluating vision of students. New volunteers attend a 3-hour training class scheduled at the school. This training provides a certificate from the Prevent Blindness Foundation valid for 2 years. Testing takes place in late September over 2-3 days.

The Yearbook Staff invites students and parents to submit photos for the yearbook. If you've got great photos of school and community events or you and your friends just having fun, we'd like to see them. Our photographers can't be everywhere. Help us get as many photos as possible to create a terrific book everyone will want to have.

Here's how you can submit photos online:
